Joey Porter Jr Traded to Dallas Cowboys Amid Contract Issues

In a significant mid-season move, the Dallas Cowboys have acquired cornerback Joey Porter Jr. from the Pittsburgh Steelers. The trade agreement, finalized on a Wednesday night, includes a 2027 sixth-round pick and a 2028 second-rounder going to the Steelers. This trade ends an ongoing contract standoff and health concerns that sidelined Porter during his time with the Steelers.

Joey Porter Jr., one of the Steelers’ top draft picks in 2023, found himself at the center of a months-long dispute over contract terms, particularly concerning the guaranteed money. Despite the team’s efforts, no progress was made on an extension, leading the Steelers to halt negotiations. With Porter’s move to Dallas, he left a parting message on Instagram, expressing his anticipation by posting, “Here I come … Dallas.”

Porter’s shift to the Cowboys comes at a crucial time as the team has been dealing with a depleted secondary. The former Steelers cornerback, who has started 41 games and recorded three interceptions over three seasons, had been out due to a back issue aggravated during preseason preparations. Although sidelined until now, there’s a chance Porter will debut in the Cowboys’ upcoming game against the Houston Texans, as they look to shore up their defense.

The Cowboys had previously indicated a willingness to invest in immediate team improvements, with owner Jerry Jones hinting at potential trades to enhance the roster. Porter’s arrival is seen as a strategic move to bolster the Cowboy’s secondary, particularly with Cobie Durant sidelined due to injury and other backups struggling with health issues. This acquisition marks the third recent trade between the Cowboys and Steelers, highlighting a continued strategy of trading draft picks for immediate talent needs.
